Khalil: A new movement might emerge from Fatah soon

AMMAN, (PIC)-- Hasan Khalil, the former director of information office in the Palestinian national council, said Saturday that what is going on in the conference of Fatah in Bethlehem is a festival of speeches, expecting that a new movement might emerge from Fatah soon.
In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Khalil noted that the Fatah conference contained many irregularities such as holding the opening session of the conference under Mahmoud Abbas’s chairmanship, adding that late president Yasser Arafat did not open the fifth conference of Fatah in 1989 in Tunisia despite his national status.
He explained that the conference must be chaired by a senior figure older in age in order for the conference not to be subject to a specific organizational rank because everyone participating in the conference is a member.
The Palestinian official criticized some Fatah leaders for considering the convening of the conference a major victory.
“What kind of victory is this while they are holding it under the bayonets of the occupation and under the Zionist flag? And what victory is this while they are convening in the presence of a jungle of settlements and hundreds of checkpoints?” the official added.
In another context related to Fatah conference, routed former Fatah security official Mohamed Dahlan verbally attacked Mahmoud Abbas in his speech at the closed meeting held on the sidelines of the conference to discuss the reasons behind the fall of Gaza in the hands of Hamas and its success in the elections.
The website of Al-Jazeera satellite channel quoted on Sunday informed sources as saying that Dahlan started his speech with making accusations against Abbas and former security officials in Gaza and categorically denying his responsibility for what happened in Gaza.
According to the website, Dahlan held Abbas fully responsible, saying that the latter handed Gaza to Hamas on a gold platter and called for elections that Hamas was sure to win.
It added that Dahlan’s accusations prompted some Fatah leaders in the meeting to retaliate and accuse Dahlan of being a security aide to the Israeli occupation.
For his part, Member of the revolutionary council Ahmed Hillis on Sunday deplored in a statement posted on the website of Fatah conference the phenomenon of distributing electoral lists in Fatah conference, saying that such behavior contributes to deepening the gap between Fatah cadres and consolidating the feelings of mistrust among them.
In a related context, senior Israeli officer in the reserve army and specialist in Palestinian affairs Moshe Elad affirmed that the statements made by Fatah leaders in their sixth conference about the Palestinian people’s right to resistance did not reflect the true positions of Fatah.
In an interview with the Hebrew radio on Monday, Elad said that the extremist positions which were expressed by Fatah leaders in their conference were made for tactical objectives that would serve Fatah in the Palestinian street.
He noted that the anti-resistance policy of Fatah would never change after the conference and such statements and speeches were made only to absorb the popular outrage.
