Zahhar: Hamas will accept results of any genuine elections

GAZA, (PIC)-- MP Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar, member of Hamas's political bureau, said on Thursday that his Movement would accept the results of any democratic and true elections in Palestine, urging Fatah Movement to announce the same.

"If the Palestinian people choose Fatah in any future elections, then we in Hamas would respect that opinion of our people, but if the people elected Hamas, then Fatah should also respect the will of our people," Zahhar said in a political forum held in Gaza city Thursday.

He also stressed that Hamas will never be part of any project to put it in enmity with any Arab country, adding that Hamas's political discourse is one whether it is in front of the Arabs or it is in front of the West. "We need everybody to support us and to rally behind our noble cause, and that's what distinguishes Hamas from others," he added.

He also explained that the Palestinian reconciliation does not mean merging the Palestinian factions together, but rather every faction should present his political platform to the Palestinian people in the elections; and it is up to the people to choose the party to rule them, and all competing parties must respect the will of the people.

However, Zahhar opined that the road to comprehensive national reconciliation should start with reconciliation between Palestinian families who are now at odds with each other, describing it as the best method to start with.

He also underlined his Movement's readiness to coordinate with other Palestinian resistance factions, saying that Hamas and the Islamic Jihad have high level of coordination. "We in Hamas are ready to go ahead with this venture to the highest level", he said.

Moreover, Zahhar criticized the negotiations between the Fatah authority in Ramallah and the Israeli occupation, saying that such negotiations brought no good to the Palestinian people because the American stand flagrantly biased for the Israelis.

"Indeed, the futile negotiations have exhausted our Palestinian people due to the contradicting agenda of the negotiating parties coupled with the Israeli conditions to recognize the Zionist entity as a Jewish state," he pointed out.
