Dweik: West Bank security violates citizens’ rights

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Speaker of the Palestinian legislative council Dr. Aziz Dweik has denounced the PA security apparatuses in the West Bank for violently quelling a peaceful rally in support of political detainees.
Policewomen assaulted MP Mona Mansour while dispersing the rally, a thing described by Dweik as a violation of the law other than being a violation of the lawmaker’s immunity.
He warned on Tuesday that such practices were impeding national reconciliation other than being a serious breach of the law.
The speaker said that releasing political detainees is one of the most important prerequisites of national reconciliation that would pave the way for fair and transparent elections.
For his part, first deputy speaker Dr. Ahmed Bahar told a solidarity rally for women at the PLC headquarters in Gaza on Tuesday that the security elements’ assault on the MP and her daughter was a serious act, adding that it violated international laws, Islamic ethics, and Palestinian traditions.
He charged that many security commanders in the West Bank do not wish to see the national reconciliation implemented because “they are serving foreign agendas and personal interests”.
Meanwhile, the political detainees said that all those involved in the attack should be brought to account.
They said in a statement that using force against a peaceful rally reflected a premeditated intention to sabotage reconciliation and the mentality of oppression.
